Ikhlas Foundation works to improve Islamic education in Lamu County, especially for women and young girls. This includes through Madrassatul Ikhlas which is located in Tchundwa village in Lamu County, and our satellite teaching centres in Mbwajumwali and Kizingitini, also on Pate Island Lamu.
History
The Madrassa started with 15 adult students in 2016, which was then intended to target adult women who didn’t have the chance to learn Quran during their youth. Our oldest student so far has been close to 80 years old.
Previously classes were taught in a temporary classroom in Tchundwa village and with volunteer teachers where often the classes were disrupted for other activities. Ikhlas Foundation has since donated land to allow for the construction of the first women-only learning institute in Tchundwa village, known as Madrassatul Ikhlas.
The Madrassa
The new centre now includes a prayer hall, bathrooms and wudhu areas, classrooms, offices and a meeting hall. With a more permanent home at the centre, we are able to provide sustainable and focused education for the women and girls. The new centre now includes a prayer hall, bathrooms and wudhu areas, classrooms, offices and a meeting hall. The madrassa has grown to over 120 students, with 60 adult and youth students alone in Tchundwa village, the youngest being 4 years old
We offer classes in Quran, Hifdh, Hadith, Lugha, Tawheed, Tajweed and many more formal and informal lessons through halaqa and darsa, taught by 6 female teachers. We added two satellite classes in Kizingitini and Mbwajumwali village, but hope to add more centres with more support.
Our Values
We also pride ourselves in having no corporal punishment used in our teaching methods. Instead we employ an effective program of positive reinforcement and social-behavioural change strategies. We promote a voluntary learning method as we believe there is no compulsion in Islam.
