Where we Work

Ikhlas Foundation operates and serves the Lamu County in the East coast of Kenya. Lamu has a rich history dating centuries as one of the first cities that flourished on the East African Coast. The main economy of the area revolves around: farming, fishing, tourism and livestock rearing. A majority of the community are Bajun and Swahili, and over 70% of the population is Muslim.

The region has been declared the best preserved living Swahili settlement in East Africa. The Swahili community are some of the oldest known practicing Muslims in East Africa who are famed for their rich Islamic heritage sites and monuments. 

Lamu has been significantly marginalized since Kenya’s independence. Main issues of concern include:

  • Poor transport and communication infrastructure

  • Remoteness of the areas

  • Unfavourable weather conditions, leading to food isecurity

  • Lack of access to safe water

  • Insecurity

  • High poverty level

  • Low literacy level and low standards of education

  • Inadequate healthcare services
