Before being registered as a trust, the Trustees of the foundation undertook their activities under the community group, Inspiration for Lamu – Helping and Mentoring (ILHAM). ILHAM was registered in 2005 as a Community Based Organisation (CBO) with the mission to inspire and assist in the advancement of the economy of women in Lamu County by improving education and health of women and children in the area. The organization was dissolved in 2015, which made way for the adoption of its objectives by the Ikhlas Foundation.

While operational, ILHAM’s specific objectives were to:

  1. Advocate for and to assist girls in the advancement of quality education, including ILHAM bursaries

  2. provide assistance and engage in services for the advancement of health-care for women and children.

  3. help build the capacity of women in economic and social development to improve their livelihoods

  4. Providing mentorship opportunities for women and youth

With the help of well-wishers and commitment from members, ILHAM undertook a number of activities in the sectors of education, health, water provision, volunteer and mentorship program, and many other activities which aimed to empower, educate, and equip the Lamu Community to and be in better position to contribute to the well being of the society.
